The Diving Bell And The Butterfly
"Thanks"

{from Wikipedia} On December 8, 1995 at the age of 43, Jean-Dominique Bauby, a well-known French journalist and fashion magazine editor, suffered a massive stroke. When he woke up 20 days later, he found that he was completely paralyzed…and left speechless…all he could do was blink one eyelid.
The Diving Bell And The Butterfly, the title of the film and of Bauby’s memoirs that he ‘wrote’ in his tragic condition, is a very beautiful film. I can’t put it in my top 5 (or even 10) for the year…but it’s a very good film…with some truly amazing camera work from the perspective of the main character who is paralyzed and unable to speak…as well as some very fine acting all around. I’m not a big fan of the director, Julian Schnabel, and while I don’t think it was as good as Basquait, there were still moments of real beauty in this movie, both visual and emotional, and it isn’t often that I can say that about a film. Worth seeing…but for me, there was just something missing…

WOW. excellent choice. I haven't met anyone else that has seen this movie. this year had kept me wanting something different, and I think this movie filled that lil void. It made me excited about movies again. That hasn't happened since I rented the movie 'Stay'.
thanks matt...yeah, I'm all about the 'different'. If you like strange, unique films...and you don't mind subtitles...check out 'The Bothersome Man'...its out there...but if you like movies that try to turn the world upside down and make you think...you'll dig it. You should be able to find it at a Blockbuster. Also...I can't say enough good things about 'There Will Be Blood'...its not a perfect film...but the cinematography is fantastic, and Daniel Day Lewis is just on fire in this movie.
Sunshine and Assassination of Jesse James are two more that kind of gave me that same 'excited about movies' feeling. Jesse James is like looking at a moving painting almost its so beautiful.
thanks again matt…and if you’ve seen any good flicks that you’d like to recommend, please, feel free…
I loved "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly", but the movie I'd rather see is "My Stroke of Insight", which is the amazing bestselling book by Dr Jill Bolte Taylor. It is an incredible story and there's a happy ending. She was a 37 year old Harvard brain scientist who had a stroke in the left half of her brain. The story is about how she fully recovered, what she learned and experienced, and it teaches a lot about how to live a better life. Her TEDTalk at TED dot com is fantastic too. It's been spread online millions of times and you'll see why!
